ELLEN B. RITTGERS: The common misconception is I can't do collaborative because there's too much here. We have multiple businesses and high income. And that actually is the perfect case.

They are not turning their lives over, their finances, or their children to somebody in a robe who's going to listen to the facts and make orders.

ELLEN B. RITTGERS: You sign a contract, which lays out all of the rules. In difficult cases, you might bring in a third collaborative lawyer to help work with all four parties around the table.
JASON A SHOWEN: If we're representing somebody, we're going to tell them what the realities of their case is.
ELLEN B. RITTGERS: If they work together and they're not fighting each other, they're going to pay less in attorney fees.
JASON A. SHOWEN: 90% of all domestic relation cases, they come and hire us. They end up settling. Any way that we can start approaching now to address getting these people beyond whatever issues are causing them to break up and focus on the future and future communication is a great step in the right direction.
