Are You Ready For Spring Riding?

It is an exciting time, as Ohio's 2015 motorcycle season is underway. Warm spring days are causing many people to quickly pull their bikes out of the garage, but several riders have already fallen this season - perhaps because they were a bit too eager.

  • An Ohio motorcyclist wrecked after he failed to negotiate a sharp curve in Mansfield on Monday. His female passenger was hospitalized after the bike went airborne before landing on her.
  • A Pennsylvania biker rear-ended a car that stopped for a gaggle of wild turkeys crossing the road. The man remained conscious but suffered serious internal injuries.

Nobody wants to admit it, but there is a bit of rust to knock off in spring. You probably do not have the "feel" of your motorcycle like you did last fall. It will come back fast, but it is something to be aware of.

You Are Not The Only One Who Is Rusty

Motorists have been driving their cars all winter without keeping an eye out for motorcyclists. They may not be looking for bikes and could easily fail to yield to you. While one should always ride with caution, it is important to be especially aware of other vehicles during spring.

Some other things to remember concerning your bike:

  • Check the fuel tank and gasoline for corrosion or gunk build-up. If any is visible, you may want to drain the gas and address any
  • Check your oil level. Change the oil and filter if you did not do so last fall.
  • Check your coolant. If it's low, you may have a leak.
  • Check your battery. It is best to keep your battery on a trickle charge, indoors, during the Ohio winter.
  • Check your tires with a pressure gauge and ensure they are not too worn or have cracks.
  • Is your bike chain-driven? Check the chain and lubricate as needed.
  • Let your bike run for several minutes before revving and riding.
  • Wear layers: being cold can quickly ruin the joy of riding and make you more vulnerable to mistakes.
