On August 2, a multiple vehicle car accident occurred on a stretch of elevated highway connecting Covington, Kentucky, with Cincinnati, Ohio. According to a police report, the accident happened around 12:15 p.m. on the upper deck of a section of the Brent Spence Bridge in Kentucky.
The incident that set the eight-vehicle accident into motion was a collision between a 2012 Mitsubishi Gallant and a tractor-trailer truck. A Cleveland, Ohio man driving the Gallant attempted to cross two lanes of traffic to exit the southbound side of the highway. That maneuver brought him into the path of the semi-truck that was being driven by a man from Greensboro, North Carolina.
The truck driver attempted to swerve to avoid hitting the Gallant, yet still struck it on its passenger side while the truck continued on. The now out-of-control semi then traveled left across multiple lanes of traffic, where it struck a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue containing four occupants; all of whom are from Cincinnati. The impact from the semi-truck forced the Oldsmobile over the side barrier of the elevator bridge. The vehicle then fell 25 feet onto the lower deck of the I-75/71 bridge with all four passengers still inside the car. The falling vehicle also struck a light pole as it fell and knocked it completely down.
The four occupants of the Oldsmobile survived the crash and the subsequent fall. Amazingly, they were transported to a hospital where police describe their injuries as non-life threatening. A man traveling northbound in a 2006 Volkswagen Touraeg tried to avoid the falling Oldsmobile as it crashed onto the lower deck. Nevertheless, the Volkswagen was struck on the driver's side before it hit a 2009 Toyota Venza. A Cincinnati man and a child were inside the Toyota at the time of that collision, which sent the vehicle into the right wall of the lower deck.
Yet another vehicle came into contact with the Volkswagen, a 1999 Ford exposition driven by a man from Groveport, Ohio. That vehicle collided with the side of the highway and nearly fell from the elevated highway down onto Fourth Street. Two other cars were also involved requiring those passengers to be hospitalized. A total of six people were taken to hospitals in either Cincinnati or Covington, Kentucky.
Cincinnati residents who are injured by preventable car accidents may be entitled to sue for compensation for their injuries and other losses.
