Thanksgiving weekend leads to drunk driving dangers

It's common in communities across America for people to go out and have a party on their days off. This is especially true on long holiday weekends - after all, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and New Years are all times for celebrating.

Much of that celebrating involves alcohol, however, and that causes many police departments to worry. Drunk driving often rises during holiday weekends, as revelers come out in force. Often, these partiers do not plan a proper designated driver and get behind the wheel themselves.

According to a spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Public Safety, there were 379 drunk driving accidents in Ohio in 2011, resulting in 410 deaths. Twenty-seven of those accidents occurred during the November and December holiday seasons.

To help prevent these accidents, police departments across Ohio have taken to the media to try to discourage people from drunk driving. Advertisements and warnings abound about the dangers of drunk driving, as well as assurances that additional patrols will be out in force during the holiday weekend.

People who attend parties where alcohol is served should plan ahead, therefore, and designate a sober driver, take public transportation or consider spending the night at the party.

Every year, many people in Ohio are injured by drunk drivers. Often, these injuries can be severe, lasting and expensive. In these situations, victims often look to personal injury lawsuits as a means of seeking compensation for their injuries. It's a measure that is often employed to help injured victims maintain financial independence after a debilitating collision.
