Fatal accidents in Hamilton and Warren County, Ohio

Modern vehicles are equipped with highly engineered devices designed to save human life and limit injury. Today, we are fortunate to have forward and side-deploying airbags, glass designed to break into small pieces upon impact, and we even have automatic chimes in our vehicles to pester us to lock in our seat belts.

However, despite all of these technological advances, each year authorities still report statistical trends related to traffic fatalities that offer us a glimpse into just how dangerous our local roadways really are.

For example, the Ohio State Patrol says that in 2012 Hamilton County, Ohio, experienced 55 fatal crashes. In 2013, there were 32 deaths attributed to vehicle accidents, and thus far in 2014, there have been 29 such fatalities. The vast majority of these accidents occurred in urban areas as opposed to rural communities. In 2012, there were 36 fatal accidents associated with urban areas versus 19 similar accidents in rural populations.

The numbers are quite different for neighboring Warren County, Ohio. Traffic-related fatalities have taken a precipitous drop in the last couple of years. In 2012, there were 19 fatal car crashes. In 2013, there were 16 such accidents. Thus far in 2014, there have been six fatal wrecks. Perhaps not surprisingly, most of these fatal accidents occurred in rural areas versus urban centers in the Warren County, Ohio, survey. In fact in 2012, 16 out of a total of 19 fatalities occurred inside of rural areas in Warren County, Ohio.

Today, it is not uncommon to hear news reports involving tragic accidents caused by drivers distracted by their cellphones or electronic gadgets. The rise in the use of cellphones while driving means that we will probably see an increase in those fatal statistics in the future.

Family members who have lost a loved one in a preventable fatal accident should know that Ohio law enables them to sue the responsible party for the wrongful death of their loved one. In some cases, it may be possible to recover compensation for the loss of financial contribution that person may have given to his or her family over the course of his or her life.
