Springfield, Ohio, man injured in bicycle accident

On Oct. 1, state troopers say that a Buick Park Avenue struck a bicyclist in Moorefield Township Ohio. The accident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. along Ohio 4. A spokesman for the Ohio State Patrol's Springfield Post indicated that both the car and the bicycle were traveling in the same direction just prior to the accident, near the intersection of Mechanicsburg Road and Bosart Road.

According to state police, the Buick was operated by a 75-year-old woman from Mechanicsburg, Ohio, and the bicyclist is a 53-year-old man from Springfield, Ohio. The victim of the bicycle accident suffered some trauma to his head during the collision and was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The nature of that victim's condition was later listed as serious. It is unknown whether the motorist suffered any injuries during the collision.

State troopers say that the actual cause of the accident still remains unknown at this time and is currently under investigation. It should be noted that a trooper offered speculation that traffic citations are likely forthcoming for both accident participants. Some witnesses to the accident indicated that the bicyclist may have moved in front of the car at some point prior to the accident.

Ohio motorists have a duty to keep a lookout for bicycle riders sharing the road with them. Far too often, drunk drivers and other motorists distracted by electronic devices forget that the strongest bike is no match for the lightest car. Even the slightest contact between a truck, car or SUV and a bicycle can leave the bicyclist with serious injuries that may require long-term medical care.

If you are an Ohio resident who has been injured in a bicycle accident, it may be possible to sue those responsible for your injuries. Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to recover money spent on medical treatments as well as money you might have earned while missing work during your recovery.
