But I wasn't on campus when it happened!

House parties; Uptown establishments; Spring break trips; Summer vacation destinations...what do all of these places have in common-aside from a high probability of underage alcohol consumption?

All of these places are off-campus. And yet, receiving a citation or committing a criminal offense at any of these off-campus locations can still result in university disciplinary proceedings being pursued by Miami University's Office of Ethics and Student Conflict Resolution (OESCR).

Miami's Code of Student Conduct (Code) governs your conduct even while you are off-campus. The Code states that "Miami University reserves the right to review and take disciplinary action based on conduct occurring off campus or between academic periods" (emphasis added).

In other words, disciplinary proceedings against you by the University don't require you to be cited by your professor, RA, or Miami University police officers. Any citation, in any court, can result in sanctions-including immediate suspension or dismissal from the University-by OESCR. Even posts on social networking or other Internet site-like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, GroupMe, Reddit, etc.-that OESCR believes violated the Code can lead to disciplinary actions by the University.

Given the broad reach of OESCR to monitor and punish you for your off-campus behavior, it's extremely important to speak with an attorney who understands the Miami disciplinary process and the potential impact of any off-campus citations or criminal charges on your ability to remain an enrolled student at Miami.
