What is Personal Injury Protection?

Personal Injury Protection is sometimes referred to as PIP coverage. This coverage is available to all Kentucky residents who have automobile insurance. It is available to the driver and all passengers in the vehicle.

But, what is it?

In 1975, the state of Kentucky enacted a new law that allowed for PIP coverage. Kentucky is a no-fault state and there are limitations on suing for personal injuries. Personal Injury Protection is a benefit that provides payment for medical expenses related to the collision and lost wages. It may reimburse medical expenses, broken eye glasses, and other needed medical equipment such as a shower seat, portable toilet, shower handles or other items medically necessary due to your injuries.

PIP will also pay for lost wages. You are entitled to up to $200.00 a week for lost wages. You will need a physician to verify that you are unable to work due to your injuries.

Is PIP capped? Yes, the coverage is capped at $10,000.00. An application for PIP coverage must be completed and signed to receive these benefits. It is important that this application is processed quickly so you can receive the benefits you are entitled to for your medical expenses and lost wages.

If you or someone you know was injured in Kentucky and has questions about the PIP Application or is interested in representation for an automobile collision, feel free to contact the Personal Injury team at Rittgers Rittgers & Nakajima at our office for a free consultation.
