Man sentenced for deadly pot- and booze-fueled car accident

An 18-year-old man will spend four years in prison and never be able to drive again as part of a plea bargain agreement for his involvement in a pot- and booze-fueled crash that killed two teens. Emotions ran high in the courtroom as emotional parents and family members spoke openly about the pain they have experienced as a result of the deaths of their loved ones.

In September of last year, the defendant was driving a 2000 Audi A6 on Steed Road in Colerain Township, Ohio, when he lost control and collided with a parked car. Police say he tested positive for marijuana and alcohol. Two of the passengers in the defendant's car died as a result of the crash, a 16-year-old girl who perished at the scene, and a 19-year-old man who died later at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The two families had completely different reactions to the defendant's statement of apology. The relatives of the young girl said that they forgave the defendant despite the fact that they missed her presence. The 19-year-old's parents were not as forgiving. In fact, the father implied that the defendant's prior drama background as good preparation for his "professionally prepared" apology. The defendant says that he hopes to complete his education after his prison sentence and work towards giving back to the community.

Regardless of how contrite the defendant's apology, the fact remains that the relatives of the victims have been deprived of the enjoyment of time spent with them and experiences they might have shared. Raising a child is an expensive endeavor; it is likely that the victims' families spent thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars to prepare those young people for a future they will now never be able to enjoy. The survivors should be entitled to recover monetary damages from the defendant for the wrongful deaths of those teens.
