Head-on collision sends 2 to hospital

When it comes to car accidents, few are more dangerous - and deadly - than head-on collisions. When a driver fails to keep his or her lane and moves into oncoming traffic, the results are often catastrophic. The momentum of both cars causes an impact of tremendous power, often causing severe injuries to everyone involved.

In Ohio this week, a three-car accident left two people in the hospital. The incident occurred on Ohio 4.

The three cars involved were a white pickup truck and a black Ford Explorer, each heading northward, as well as a southbound Buick minivan. As the vehicles approached each other, the minivan drifted into the southbound lane. The driver of the white pickup truck reacted quickly and turned off the road, sliding into a snowbank. The driver of the Explorer, who had been trailing the pickup truck, did not see the oncoming Buick until it was too late. The two vehicles collided head-on and spun to the side of the road.

Incredibly, both drivers were responsive when emergency personnel arrived. They were transported to Marion General Hospital. Sources described their injuries as "non-life threatening."

Authorities are unsure what caused the driver of the minivan to veer out of her lane. The road was not slippery at the time of the accident, which makes ice an unlikely culprit.

Head-on collisions are often caused by one of a few factors. Alcohol is a common cause, of course; it plays a role in many types of car accidents. Distracted driving can also cause a driver to move out of a lane. A driver who is looking at his or her cellphone can easily fail to properly negotiate a curve in the road, leading him or her to slide into oncoming traffic.

This sort of negligent behavior is often the basis for personal injury lawsuits, as injured victims seek repayment for their injuries and other damages.
